Is there an upside? If there is, it's the fact that while I've been laid up, each day I've had at least a couple different friends stop by to check on me, bring me things, and wish me well. That's been the best part by far.
Here are some things I've learned while being immobile the last few days:
- There is NOTHING worth watching on TV during the day.
- There's really no comfortable "elevated leg" position.
- I'll never again take this for granted: being able to go the bathroom any time I want.
- If one fails to shower, one begins to stink.
- I'm not so good with crutches (never been on them before).
- Not being able to do what you want/need to do changes your perspective on things.
- I have a new found compassion for people who suffer from chronic pain.
For those interested, my ankle/foot worse today than any day so far. It's like my whole foot is bruised (black & blue), even my toes! The bruising goes up the inside of my leg almost to my knee. The pain is more bearable but it's still hard to get comfortable. Oh well, I guess that's enough pity-party for now.

Last February I slipped on the ice and twisted/sprained my ankle. Maybe cracked a bone, but the dr. couldn't decide. It's wasn't as bad as yours sounds, but I can tell you the bruising is worse after a week! I feel for you, hang in there and if it snows, stay inside!!
I totally got ya!
I fell the first day of the Alive Fest this summer. Walked on it the whole week. Childbirth was worse, but when I did make it to the doctor he found a hairline fracture in one of the ankle bones and much damage to the tissues around it.
Spent JULY and AUGUST (no air at home)with a hard cast from my toes to my knee. There is no such thing as a 'comfortable elevated leg position'.
And... children should remember all the dirty diapers that we changed on them when they get ideas on what to say to us just because we can't bathe as often as we usually do!!
I had my ankle fused about five years ago due to a birth defect that went unnoticed. I TOTALLY understand your pain, as well as the immobility thing. Showering too, was dificult, but I got a newfangle bag to cover the cast with that went all the way to my thigh. I believe you can get one at any drug store around now. Well, best wishes for a better new Year and have a blessed christmas!
Merry Christmas....big brother...and fam!
Hope you had fun in Hamilton....hopefully we'll see you soon!
