sunday’s scuds (may 10, 2009)

We started a brand new series at NewPointe on Sunday. It’s called Livin’ In the Hood. It’s a series on parenting. Dwight’s message, part one of the series, was not only full of great scuds but MAN, it spoke to me in a big way. I was challenged, convicted, and motivated to be a better dad. If you missed it, I strongly encourage you to get the CD or listen online.

Here are the scuds:

  • We all grew up in dysfunctional homes. None of us had perfect parents…none of us ARE perfect parents.
  • You’ll never be a perfect parent.
  • Every parent needs to learn how to be a parent.
  • The basic job of a parent is to equip their children for life.
  • Our kids are getting older at a younger age.
  • How well your kids respond to authority in your home is an indicator of how well they’re being prepared for life.
  • If you don’t master your hormones, your hormones will end up mastering you.
  • The greatest gift you can give your child is authentic faith.
  • If we’re going to hang together as a family, we’ve got to eat together.
  • The church is not your kid’s spiritual leader. YOU are your kids’ spiritual leader.
  • If you want your kids to have an authentic faith, teach them spiritual disciplines.
  • Do you know that God created sex? He didn’t look at Adam and Eve and say, “What in the world are they doing?”
  • Young ladies, if you want a guy to appreciate you for you mind, don’t overwhelm him with your cleavage and your navel.
  • The biggest issue in most marriages is the issue of trust.
  • Your friends will determine the direction and the quality of your life.
  • I want to equip my kids with a compass rather than a map.
  • If you’re self-absorbed, you won’t do very well in life.

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. –1 Corinthians 11:1
