sunday’s scuds (may 24, 2009)

Sunday Dwight continued the series, LIVIN’ IN THE HOOD with part 3, THE BIG “I”. The “I” stands for influence. Here are the scuds:

  • You may not always understand your kids but you can always engage them.
  • Nobody is an expert in parenting.
  • Nobody should try to be a perfect parent.
  • If you try to be a perfect parent, you’ll destroy your relationship with your kids.
  • As a parent, you have more potential than anyone else to influence your kids for God.
  • The Bible doesn’t have much to say about the church influencing your kids.
  • You (not the church) need to be the spiritual leader to your kids.
  • Seventh-graders are mean.
  • We don’t give you a history lesson on Sunday mornings. We believe the Bible teaches us how to live.
  • Relationships determine level of influence.
  • Your kids don’t care how much you know till they know how much you care.
  • Your relationship with your son or daughter sets them up for all their other relationships.
  • The most important thing you can give your kids is a healthy relationship.
  • Two keys to all healthy relationships: acceptance and time together.
  • The way you get back into a relationship that’s been damaged: serve them.

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and humankind. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:1-6
